    it has been okay for two years and suddenly this am mystified and cannot record.

      Just go to this page on the Samsung website, you can choose your language and download a manual for Samsung DVD-SH873M: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP00&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=DVD-SH873M&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P
