Everything Dollybird said but I have to add that being hurt by a loved one is also mental pain, mental abuse creates a lifetime of mental pain as well.

Mental pain is what a person feels when they are been tortured. Example,.  Police brutally torture a person when they want person to make confession, ( maybe to some thing, the person didnot do.) They use  electroshock treatment, to any part of body. Near suffocation by putting plastic bag over persons head and excessive beating, till person passes out, or almost dead. Subject a person to a suffocating water torture, pulling off finger/toe nails. Just examples, also some people, who have mental health problems, depending how bad it is.

When your emotional feelings are hurt.

To be heartbroken.

Great anxiety, anguish 

mental feelings are just as painful as physical pain. people have taken suicide as a way out.

It means you need an aspirin; and, maybe you've been thinking too much.
