Not in Australia that I am aware it is "elective" not critical surgery. Don`t hold me to this but I am pretty sure. I would ask any one considering lapband to read this. A woman who could not lose weight considered lapband but found it was too expensive. A few months later she was diagnosed with stomach cancer and subsequently had her total stomach removed to rid her of the cancer. She was told had she had the lapband the chances were that the cancer would not have been discovered until it was too late. She lost the weight and several dress sizes due to being only able to eat small meals as she has no "holding" tank ie stomach. This is a true story I know because I am married to her.
