I found your question not in the least "silly" as has been stated, on the contrary I was curious to find out the answer, so I checked up with Wiki who seems to know a thing or two. He explained that a portion of the barley used is roasted and it is this that gives Guinness its dark colour and characteristic taste.

I knew something had to be roasted, and quite a bit, by that dark color! You enlightened me also.
