    Instructions
    Citizenship Eligibility

    1
Ensure that your spouse has lawful permanent resident status (a "green card.") He must have this standing for at least three years prior to applying for citizenship. He must also be at least eighteen years old.

    2
Reside with your spouse for at least three months in the state where he petitioned for citizenship. He must also be present in the U.S. for at least a year and a half before applying. After petitioning for citizenship, your spouse cannot leave the country until it is granted without risking the denial of his supplication.

    3
Help your mate maintain good moral character through example. To preserve good moral character, it is crucial that he breaks no U.S. federal or state laws.

    4
Teach your partner how to read and write in English. At least an elementary level understanding of the English language is required to obtain citizenship. Additionally, the citizenship exam will be in English.

    5
Take a community college U.S. history class with your spouse. To gain naturalization, he must have a basic knowledge of U.S. history. By taking a class together, you can help him study for the citizenship exam.

    Obtaining Citizenship

    6
Acquire an N-400 form from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Make sure your spouse fills in any required information and registers for selective services as not doing so can be grounds for denial. Enclose all required documents and a check for the filing fee and biometrics appointment with the application when mailing it to USCIS. After sending in the N-400, your spouse will receive a notice to appear for a biometrics appointment, at which he will be fingerprinted and photographed.

    7
Accompany your spouse to his citizenship exam and interview. Roughly six weeks after completing the biometrics appointment, he will receive a letter summoning him to an interview or an oral exam. The examination will assess his knowledge of both U.S. history and spoken and written English. If all goes well, your spouse will receive notification in the mail, and be given an appointment to attend a naturalization oath ceremony.

    8
Attend the naturalization ceremony with your spouse. Your spouse will be asked questions about the time between the interview and the ceremony. Then he will take an oath pledging allegiance to the U.S. and giving up any loyalty to his previous country. Finally, your spouse will be given a certificate of naturalization.
