    does salt make water boil faster

    Actually, any solute added to a solution RAISES the boiling point. YES it does.

    I'm confused. If the salt raises the boiling point, does that mean the temp has to be higher than 212 F/100 C. If that is the case, then salt would not make water boil faster. Please clarify?

    If undisturbed water is heated to above its Boiling temperature ( super heated ), adding salt will cause it to immediately boil over. This phenomenon is easy to observe with liquids heated in a Microwave oven.

    When I add salt to water I want to boil, it is because I am going to be boiling pasta and the salt helps the water not foam up and boil over.  Oil works better, I think.....just a couple of drops... cooking oil, not motor oil.
