Could it be from the old black boards in schools. At the end of every day one of the children would have to clean the black board, that is wipe off the chalk writing ready for tomorrow. This cleaning was with a wooden block about 4 inches x 2 inches with a felt pad on one face called a "duster" So when the task was finished it was "Done and dusted" Sounds feasible to this little black duck.

It's the best idea I've seen.
I've heard of it. The origins are uncertain. Odd because most of these old sayings have known roots... like "it;s cold enough to freeze the balls on a brass monkey".

Yes. In icy conditions brass cannon balls stacked on a "monkey" aboard a fighting ship froze where they were, useless.
