    How can fish breath under water?

    There are two ways...one is through the gills for fish such as a neon tetra.  The gills filter oxygen out of the water.


    The other is through lungs like us.  Some fish such as the Betta have labarynth lung systems which means they can breathe as we do.  This enables them to live in small pockets of water when the seasonal drought happens each year.  That is also why they can live in small bowls happily and also why they tend to kill each other...a small body of water can only sustain one life.
