    what is the difference in uses for decanter shapes

    To me the name decanter must surely come fron "decant" which simply put means to put into a container from a larger source. You decant the wine from a cask into a "decanter" so the shape is incidental althoug the large bottom to stop tipping aboard ships has possibilities. My guess it started yonks ago with ships and has stayed with us. That is "yonks" ago not "yanks" yonks being a long long time.

    Those with wide bottoms were used on ships so they would not tip so easily. I don't know who some are round or square but gin usually comes in square.
