    -3000  (3000 less than nothing or zero)


    Think of it this way.   You have $1,000 in your wallet, but you owe $4,000 in credit card bills.  Your net worth is less than zero, becuse you have less than nothing BECAUSE you have a debt to pay that is greater than your assets.   You can pay $1000 of your debt, leaving you no money, and a remaining debt of $3,000 (which puts you in the red, below zero).  Numbers that reflect less than zero have the dash (-) in front of them to alert the reader that the number represents LESS than zero.

    You cant take 4000 away from 1000


    But lets make it 4000 - 1000


    then we have 3000
