Here are a list of the common reasons as to why your computer may be freezing.

Software Errors
Have you installed any third-party software recently? There are occasions when the functions of software do not cooperate with your Windows platform and if your operating system does not understand what to do, it comes to a stand still and freezes. Try uninstalling any recent additions and assess whether the problem continues

Viruses
If your computer is infected with a virus, it can very well freeze. Check to see if your anti-virus software is up to date and fun a full system scan.

Temperature
Does your computer heat up? Overheating is a common reason for a computer to freeze. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is an integral component of your system and it uses a fan to circulate air and keep it running at a normal temperature. If it does start to heat up, or the fan stops working optimally make sure that its vents are not blocked.

Corrupt Files and Disk Space
Every time software is installed and uninstalled and every time you browse the internet your computer stores remnants of files, temp files and overtime this can grow to a significant volume. This content is unnecessary and simply takes up space. Running a Registry Cleaner can detect and repair any errors, free up disk space and eliminate clutter. Think of it as a good system tune up. If your computer's registry contain corrupt information it will send Windows off doing useless tasks or running unneeded routines which can result in freezing.

Hard Drive Is Full
A computer's hard drive requires at least 15% free space to operate. If yours is too full, delete unwanted software.

Too Many Programs Running
Do you have too many programs running at the same time? Your system could be running in circles trying to keep up.

Defrag Your Computer
Run the Windows defragmenter to help speed things up. Start>All Programs> Accessories> System Tools>Disk defragmenter. This may take a while to run but it will clean up unused space and 're-file' things again making it easier for your computer to find things when requested to.

Remove Programs From Startup
If your computer freezes on start up, there could be too many programs that it is trying to load before it even opens for you to use. Press Start>Run and enter msconfig and then click 'Startup' tab. Un-tick any programs that you do not want to pre-load.
