How is the saying "the Sum is greater that the parts" applied to everyday experience?

The sum is greater than the parts. Does this mean there is a synergistic effect that multiplies the energy of the each unit when combined together?

You're talking about the German concept of Gestalt. It is kind of like if you took 100 people from a town and put them each in a room by themselves. They would seem very different than they will out and interacting with each other in real life. Gestalt is the overall perception one gets from looking at the whole whatever. You might be looking at a painting--you can look at one brush stroke and then step back and look at the whole painting and get a totally different feeling from it.
