There are specialty primer/sealers for this application.One of them is "Zinsser" "B.I.N." sealer.It's quite expensive but it works.Dries quickly & you clean up your gear with methylated sprits.
Another method is to sand the varnish with fine sand paper & give it a coat of "Silver Frost" silver paint.I have used this method many times.It just takes a little longer waiting for the silver to dry before you apply subsequent coats.
