On September 16, 1963, Malaysia, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak became independent from the British after the colonization of 144 years had expired.  For two years hence,  Singapore was part of Malaysia but there were numerous conflicts between people in Sinagapore and people from Malaysia, mostly racial problems between the ethnic Chinese from Singapore and Malay from the rest of Malaysia.  The conflict got so bad that two years after the separation from the British, Tunku Abdul Rahman, the prime minister of Malaysia, expelled Singapore from its country.  In 1965, Singapore  became the Republic of Singapore after Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore and Tunku Abdul Rahman signed a legal separation for the two countries.

Was it a mistake from the part of Malaysia?   Major major major.  Efforts to reunite Singapore back to Malaysia have failed again and again.  Lee Kuan Yew took Singapore to heights nobody had seen before.  A country with absolutely no natural resources to speak of except human minds had become a super economic power in Asia.  Many times Malaysia tried to cut off water supply (Singapore has no water of its own), but Singapore never caved in and always prevailed.

    Majulah Singapura.
