"SHORT A" is where the vowel "a" has the sound you hear in words like:
sAndwich, romAnce, Absolute, cAndy, rAt, Answer
In contrast, "LONG A" is where the vowel "a" has the sound of how you say the LETTER "A" when you are saying the alphabet. The vowel "says its own name" in the word. This goes for E, I, O, U in their "long" sound.
Example: nAme, mAke or mAde. April, mAybe
