What defines a street, a road, an avenue, etc?

How is each name determined?  Some roadways differ only by rd, or st., or blvd, etc

an avenue has trees lining both sides of the road. or high volume traffic area in a city/some towns.

A street is usually in a city, populated area, paved, but not always.

A road is in between cities, or towns, usually the country. You can ride horses, wagons, cars, etc.. on.
