Programs
1
Close unnecessary programs. Click the "X" in the top right hand corner of the program page. Close passive programs that are on the quick launch bar (in Windows) by right clicking and choosing the appropriate option to end the application.
2
Run only one demanding program at a time. For example, if you are playing a computer game that requires many resources (memory), consider closing programs that also require many resources, such as media players or editors.
3
Click on the "Start" menu and type "msconfig" into the "Run" or "Search" dialogue. Click on the "Start Up" tab. Uncheck any programs that do not need to run as the computer powers on.
4
End processes that have stopped responding. Right click the task bar and choose "Task Manager." Click on the "Applications" tab. Highlight any applications that are in status "Not Responding" and click on the "End Task" button.
Browsers
5
Close all unnecessary browser tabs or windows. This is especially true if the multiple pages contain media such as Flash, Shockwave or Javascript.
6
Disable or uninstall plugins from your frequently used programs, such as Web browsers or email clients.
7
Restart your Web browser periodically.
8
Clear out personal information from your browser. In Firefox, select "Clear Recent History" from the tools menu and select some or all of the data to delete. In Internet Explorer, open the "Tools" menu and choose "Delete Browsing History."
