Yes, bats are a carrier. North Carolina Zoo, in Asheboro, had an out break a few years back. They had received infected bats. Also the only person the survive rabies, was a 15 year old girl. She was bitten by a bat. They had to induce a coma for over a month, she lived! That was in a mid western state. First person in history to survive rabies!
There is a site you can goggle, it will tell you how many animals each year is infected with rabies per state. Raccoons, foxes, and bats are at the top of the list. I haven't researched how bats get infected. They usually live off insects and fruit. They are not consuming contaminated meat. Maybe through water, I don't know....yet.
