What makes a "fixed" male cat gain so much weight? Why?

My make tom was captured and deballed then released... He has become more docile but has gained at least 5 pounds (not good for a cat). Why is he gaining so much weight, is it a hormonal thing?

They no longer need to chase the ladies and growl scream fight and generaly make a lot of noise this could be the reason for the wt. gain

jhharlan,  think about it.  There's essentially nothing else left to do but to lick its paws, and how much time can you spend licking paws?  It eats, naps, eats, poops, naps, licks paws, and the daily cycle goes on.

I have several neutered males they are not lazy nor fat.  perhaps it is the diet you are feeding him?
