Log in to Windows Live using your email address and password. Click "Tools" from the top menu bar followed by "Options." Type your new display name in the first box and click "Apply" on the bottom of the screen. Click "OK" to save the changes. Be sure you click "Apply" to finish saving the changes; if you skip this step it will not change your display name.

Log out of Windows Live Messenger if you cannot see the name change at first. Log back in. If the changes were not made, repeat Step 1.

Check your Internet connection. If you are not properly connected, you may not be logged in to Windows Live. You cannot change your display name if you are not logged in.
