    how long can you leave butter out of refrigerator

    USDA Guidelines says butter should not be left out for more than 15 minutes to soften. If my butter has been left sitting on the counter for more than a couple of hours then I through it away. When I was growing up, the butter was kept  on the table and not refrigerated. I would never recommend leaving it out. Now I know why our butter always had a rancid odor.
