      I don't know where you live but here in Chicago I saw many newscasts regarding tornadoes (no hurricanes here!) that always advised people to take special care of their pets' needs in a storm of any kind.

        Thinking logically, the pet would need the same protective measures as yourself.  You can't safely leave the animal outdoors if you wouldn't leave yourself outdoors!  If you need to go into the storm cellar during a tornado, wouldn't your pet go with you?
