      Yes, you can have a job when you're on S S I. You're allowed to work a certain number of hours per week. This is what they taught us in a grad class at EMU. Also, my g.freind's son was mentally challenged and he got SSI plus  he worked. He eventually got SSD too....which is permanent. She had applied to it for him and it took a year of beauracracy. Unfortunately, he died last April of Luekemia.
