Every year there is a new list of names for potential hurricanes. The names alternate from male to female on different letters of the alphabet. At this time, a number of tropical storms have occurred already, so this particular storm which happens to be a hurricane came along at letter I and female name and the pre-chosen name happened to be Irene.
