Southwest allows one personal item in the cabin per passenger. These items, such as a briefcase, laptop, backpack or camera bag, may be carried on in addition to the one allowable carry-on bag. Some personal items, such as disposable food containers, walking sticks, jackets and personal mobility devices are among the items not counted as "personal items" or "carry-on bags," but which Southwest still allows onboard.

If you fly Ryanair your pack has to fit easily into the gauge provided at check-in otherwise they will charge you extra. You also have to be within the weight limit.
