every year I try to renew on line it is rejected saying the insurance is not valid/ upto date and have to go to a post office to renew is there any way this can be avioded

I am assuming that you cannot meet both payments? My suggestion would be to pay your insurance and file your income tax and send them a cheque ASAP.
Usually with Car insurance if you miss a payment they will give you another opportunity the following month to pay your insurance. If you miss the next payment they will cancel your insurance policy and it will go on your record. When you try to find another company to insure you your rates will go up considerably and a lot of insurance companies will refuse to insure you. Try and keep your record as clean as possible.
