Compel can mean by force (could be your own or someone else) or irresistibly drawn to.

Example:  I was compelled to tell the truth because perjury would have landed me in jail.

(forced, in my own best interes)

Example:  I was compelled to admit to breaking the window by the much older and bigger kid who DID break the window.  (forced by threat, not of my own free will)

Example:  I was compelled to stare at the handsome young man in spite of myself.

(forced beyond reasonable persuasion, of my own free will, irresistibly drawn to looking at him))

I was compelled to drink with a bunch of underage boys last night because the devil made me do it.

Compelled:  to be deeply influenced into doing something
