    WIthout looking in a dictionary, 


    .....a martyr is someone who is willing (and often DOES) give up his/her life for what he/she believes. 


    The kamikaze pilots who flew suicide missions for the Japanese during World War II could probably be considered martyrs of a sort, as they gave up their lives for their political beliefs.


    Martyrdom is the action.


    Sometimes someone is martyred for "everyone".  Jesus comes to mind....
