Most, if not all, require you to be an EMT to be a fireman today.  With that, science is very important.  Maybe something majoring in science or fire science, as there are such programs.

It shouldn’t but when you get down to it, they are going to pick from t he best resume…...

a lot of it's nepotism too.

I have a good friend who is a fire fighter...major fires around the USA. He doesn't have any kind of college education/degree.  Neither does my 7th grade boyfriend or the bus driver I went to high school with who are firemen for my hometown.

Best advice I can give you is to talk to someone who is working at the fire station where YOU want to be.

a business degree would be good , so if they promote you to accounting or fire chief, you'll be able to handle the business end of it.Every proffession has a business in it somewhere. You know what they say about Show Biz .
