    when building a fence how far can you build it from the property line and how tall?

    Most of this stuff is usually settled by a mutual agreement between you & your neighbour.


    If there is a reason the fence can not follow the property line such as trees etc you should discuss it with the neighbour.If he will not agree to a deviation tell him he will have to pay half for the trees removal.


    The max. height for a fence is usually 6 Feet (1.8 Metres) in most places.Although there would be variations to this rule as well.


    The best place to enquire is your local authority (Council).

    We just built our fence in Hawaii.  The building department asked us to build 2 inches inside our property line.  Hence, a survey of the demarkation line was ordered.  We were allowed to build up to 6 feet high.
