Many people are intrigued by British snakes. They are curious to know what types of snakes live in Britain? Did you know that there are only three types of snakes in the whole of the British Isles? Only one of them is venomous too. So if you are looking for venomous snakes in Britain you won't exactly be spoiled for choice. Of all the poisonous snakes in the world Britain accounts for just one of them.

Britain does not inhabit a great deal of reptiles which is mostly because of its cool, damp climate. It does, however, support three types of native British snakes, the Adder, the Grass snake and the Smooth snake. The Adder and the Grass snake are the most common known snakes on the British Isles, however, the Smooth snake is only recognised by very few people.
The distribution of these three snakes is quite wide with the Adder being spread all over mainland Britain, the grass snake generally keeping to the warmer regions just below Scotland and down to the South Coast and the smooth snake only found in the Southern Counties.
In order to survive the harsh winters, all three snakes hibernate from October time right through to spring, conserving their energy by slowing down their metabolism until the sun is strong enough to be able to provide them with the solar energy they require to move and hunt
