      When you are purchasing gold it is weighed by the karat. The karat weight is higher by how soft the gold is. When you are getting gold in large quantities it is measured by the ounce or even the pound.

        Karats are an ancient way of weighing gold, based on carob seeds which were thought to be very consistent weight-wise. Today gold is weighed using the metric system, used worldwide except the USA.
