You can start by opening an account with Charles Schwab. I would start by buying stocks of companies that make products that we use every day, or consumer staple stocks. These are stocks that manufacture things we need such as food, tobacco, soft drinks, water, toiletries, etc. Because they are considered less risky, they tend to hold up better when the stock market is nervous or volatiel. Some names include: Pepsi, Hersheys, General Mills, Kraft, Altria, Coke, Johnson and Johnson, Merck, & Teva Pharmaceutical. They tend also to pay good dividends as well.
