    Sound waves, or a real long ruler..............lol

    It is measured by a detection device calaled sonar.  Sound waves are sent by the sonar to the ocean floor and their return time noted. Sound waves travel through the water at the rate of 5000 feet per second, so by measuring the time it takes for the sound waves to go and return, the sea depth can be measured.
