    Wood that's been treated (pressurized) for outdoor use will always have that light green look to it before you stain it. Nothing you do will UN-TREAT IT.  This type wood will "stain" but it won't have a natural wood look like untreated wood. It will still look nice after staining.


    Wood that's NOT pressurised can be cleaned by POWER WASHING or SANDING it.


    I prefer power washing first but it you don't own a PW sanding the wood is your best bet.


    Thompson Water Seal works well but it needs to be re-applied after a few months. A good stain will last you a year before you'll need re-applying.
