Most operating systems auto-update. You can google the operating system your computer uses and check to see if there's an update for it. Just type your operating system into your search bar and add update. When you click the download button, if you do not need an update, you will get a message telling you so.

This is a site with valuable information that you may also need. Your computer doesn't have to be a Vista to use the information on the page. Under the 'Help & Hot-to' lists other computer types. (Same link).
