I have just got out my husband's kindle and would like to use it. He bought it in October 2009. If I deregister it I will lose all the books he has bought, but I need my own account number as I do not know his password. What do I need to do?

According to Kindle support you can register a Kindle that has been registered to another before. You can also migrate content from one account to another. (see both here.) However, I'm not sure if need to deregister the original account first (I'd give it a try anyways to make sure), and in order to migrate the contents of your late husband's Kindle library to the new account you'll need access to the old one. I think you'll need to contact Kindle support for help in order to do this.
