    What causes water retention in the legs?

    I don't mean to scare  you , but if you're an older person and you have edema. ( water retention ) in the legs, it usually means that your heart is failing to do it's job. That's called congestive heart failure. You can get treatment for that, and live on for another 10--15--20 years, depending on your age and weight and other factors.  Some edema in the legs is caused by lymph glands and nodes being affected by cancer or chemo or lymph node surgery.
