             The question of “is hard cider good for you” is one that is most commonly asked. After extensive, coming to a definitive conclusion is somewhat difficult at best due to the lack of any official research on the subject. Personally, I have made it all the time for year’s and year’s and have never had any inclination of a problem. Some of you may be asking what exactly hard cider is. Well the short answer is that hard cider usually refers to “apple cider”, that has had a chance to ferment for a couple weeks and the original sugars have actually been turned into alcohol. Now based on that answer, the potency of your hard cider is based upon several determining factors.


    The first of these factors is to actually choose the juice you use. Personally, I recommend that you use fresh apple cider fresh from the press and barely even a day old. If you’re unable to purchase fresh made cider and have to purchase apple cider in the store, please make sure that there are no artificial preservatives as these extra ingredients will kill your yeast and do nothing but give you an upset stomach. (The cider is chemically preserved if sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate are listed on the label.)


    Taking all of this information into account, realistically there are only a few problems one could ever foresee. If you purchase an apple cider with preservatives, your yeast won’t set and your cider will not ferment which will give you a sour stomach. Another possibility is if you don’t quite let the cider ferment long enough, all of the sugars will not have had a chance to turn to alcohol in which case after sampling, you will have a sour taste in your mouth.


    Of those few highly unlikely possibilities the only other foreseeable chance is that you drink too much of the hard cider and you get really drunk and/or possibly wake up with a hangover. So to conclusively answer the question is hard cider good for you, I would have to say that it’s neither good nor bad for you. At worst an upset stomach, at its best, you’ll have a top notch alcoholic hard cider beverage.
