Boys can ask out a friend in person, by calling and speaking to the friend, in an email, text message, or a written invitation sent in the mail. 

It used to be common for a boy to ask out a friend by saying something like, "Would you like to go to a movie with me on Friday night?  We can get a hamburger before the show."    Quite simple, really.
