The library of Alexandria in Egypt was burned down by Julius Caesar. The library was legendary in its day even, and held precious knowledge. The scrolls stored therein were burned, and thus "lost". But since the library's destruction it's been said that some scrolls survived the fire, but are now lost - a treasure forgotten somewhere.
