from the name of an explorer, Americus (Amerigo) Vespucci.

South America and North America were named after Amerigo Vespucci in 1507.  Martin Waldseemuller, a German map maker is generally credited with having invented the word "America".

america was named after the explorer correct. however, is not the country. america is the whole "new world". so does that means that we are a country without a name??
