WHAT IS AN UNFILED CLARINET REED?

First, a little information:  the differences between filed and unfiled reeds are only marginal at best, as the major deciding factors of tone quality, response, projection, longevity, etc. are the thickness, cut, and strength of the reed. However, generally speaking, between two reeds that are exactly alike in every way except for the file, the filed reed should have a slightly brighter tone, while the unfiled reed can potentially be a little grainier, courser, or raspier in tone.
