    will a tree die if the bark is completely split by lightning from top to bottom in two places?

    If just the bark is split, the tree may be ok, just have marks of life on it. The bark, after all, is really nothing more than the skin of a tree. The tree, however, would probably be more prone to disease especially while the open wounds are healing, so to speak.
