Send your friend a card and a gift and explained that you are just not in the right frame of mind for a social event. A good friend will understand and not take offense.

Typical think only of one self. You make sacrifices for friends.I guess my position on this comes from being a Marine.Loyalty is first its the only way.I disagree with you here . You are entitled to your opinion just as I am to mine .I would be offended .
When a person is not up to socializing and does not feel well, then they will only bring their friend and others down by being at the party and not enjoying themselves. This is a young kid who asked. I do not expect kids to have to put themselves out like a marine would. Typical of a marine to not notice that kids are different and do not have to be macho.

Difficult decision :Your friend has but one day and you are invited ,that one I would go to. As to your aunt s school that will go on for many days and the chance to help will come many times . In life if you get acouple of really good friends you are blessed .Birthdays come but once a year ,school goes on for months. I hope this helps , Bill
