      As a pianist myself I can say possibly two reasons. 


      1. support for his forearms.  He is a rock/jazz pianist and places lots of force on his forearms.  


      2.  aesthetics-  He thinks it looks cool.  


      Personally i would think it would slow him down with the added weight but apparently not. so the jury is out on this.  but those are my choices.
