Lime to about 6.0 to 6.5, and I have used aged hen manure in the past, I had the best lawn of my life! With no access to that any more, I have used many brands of fertilizer. Key is lime, fertilize, water sparingly (make the roots stay deep). Also, mow only cutting up to maximum of one third of the length of the grass at a mowing, always using a sharp blade on the mower! If the soil needs amendment, add some compost by broadcasting it over the turf, just about 1/4 in. should do. You can do a pH test on your soil, to know what the acidity is, thus will know how much lime to apply. Most garden centers sell DIY kits for this at about $10.
