    You cannot redeem savings bonds until they are at least 12 months old. Once they reach that point, you can cash them in for their current value at any time. You can find a savings bond's current value through one of several tools at TreasuryDirect.gov. If you redeem a savings bond before it is five years old, there is a penalty. You will forfeit the last three months worth of interest payments.
