the dryer will turn on and allow us to select a drying option, but the start button will not light up or turn on the actual dryer. Possible causes?

Dryers have a safety mechanism that allows it to work only when it's door is properly closed, so you can check if the door closes properly and if everything seems okay you can give it a little push inwards. If that doesn't help then there either a problem with the sensors of the dryers door or an electric problem with the start button.

The switch is broken, call a repairman.
