When going downhill if you hit a brick or rock, you could be pitched over the handlebars, this was known as 'taking a header'. To avoid this, people used to hang their legs over the handlebars so the feet would hit the ground first.
The 'penny farthing' was officially called the 'high ordinary' and the type we ride nowadays was the 'safety'.
